In this lesson, students will use a variety of skills in order to understand the immigrant experience for those arriving at Ellis Island at the turn of the 19th century. Students will read a first-hand account of an immigrant's voyage to Ellis Island and The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. Students will also watch videos in order to understand the process immigrants went through at Ellis Island, and analyze graphs in order to understand the vast number of immigrants that arrived in the country during the time. The lesson will incorporate several different activities in order to target multiple intelligences and entry points including augmented reality, videos, primary texts and graphs. By the end of this lesson, students will understand why people left their country and what they endured in order to achieve their dream of living in America.
